Five labourers suffered burns after a fire broke out at a plastic granules (chips) manufacturing unit at Udhna in Surat on Monday, police said. The labourers suffered over 50 per cent burns and are undergoing treatment at New Civil Hospital, where doctors said their condition is critical.
According to the Surat fire department, the incident occurred at RMS Plast, a plastic granules manufacturing unit in Uma Industrial Estate, Sanjaynagar. The factory stocks waste plastic materials, which are processed and converted into granules (chips).
After the fire was noticed, most of the workers came out safely and the five with severe burns were rescued by their co-workers and taken to hospital.
A fire brigade team soon reached the scene and began battling the blaze. Other factories in the vicinity were also vacated by fire department officials, as a precautionary measure. After the incident came to light, a large number of people gathered on the spot.
The police also reached the scene and cleared a path for the fire tenders to reach it without any traffic obstacles.
The injured are identified as Charan Sahu (27), Amir Ansari (32), Niraj Bharti (22), Usman Mohammed (18), and Lalit Vishwakarma (30), all residents of the Udhna and Limbayat areas of Surat.
Udhan Fire Officer Rohit Khalasi said, “We brought the fire under control after two hours of battling with the fire flames. The factory’s stock of plastic waste materials and plastic chips led to the fire spreading to various parts of the factory. Two machines have been gutted by the fire. The cause of the fire may be due to a short circuit.”

Udhna police inspector S N Desai said, “The factory is owned by two brothers – Mohammed and Rafik Memon. We are analysing their documents. We have also asked GPCB and factory inspector staffers to check the documents and provide us with a report. At present, we have registered an accidental death in the complaint, and once we get a report from the GPCB and factory inspector, we will register a complaint against the owners. The injured ones have incurred burn injuries of over 50 per cent, and their condition is reported to be critical by doctors.”
