Forged letter and a police complaint from ex-Assam CM: ‘Meant to cause political disharmony’
FIR registered after Sarbananda Sonowal’s office highlighted letter bearing his signature and official letterhead circulating online
The letter in question claims to be addressed to the National President of the BJP, and its contents purport to show Sonowal, who was the chief minister of Assam in the 2016-2021 term, expressing concern that the BJP is likely to lose the assembly election and asking for a different chief ministerial face. Police in Delhi have registered an FIR against an unknown person following a complaint of forgery by Union Cabinet Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s office about a letter bearing his signature and official letterhead circulating online.
An FIR was registered on Monday at the Parliament Street police station under sections of cheating and forgery.
This is based on a complaint filed by Sonowal’s Assistant PS at the station, alleging that the letter was forged “for malafide intent to cause political disharmony in an election-bound state” and “for causing disrepute to a Cabinet Minister”.
