BHUJ, AUGUST 2: Port workers all over the country have decided to go on an indefinite strike from August 10 following the failure of wage-related talks between the Union Surface Transport Ministry and five federations of port and dock workers in Delhi on Monday.

“The federations have served a formal strike notice to the government. Workers at all 11 major ports, including Kandla, will strike work from August 10 midnight,” KPT labour trustee and member of the national-level bipartite wage negotiation committee Manohar Bellani said on Wednesday.

The port workers are demanding payment of house rent allowance from January 1, 1998, — the date from which the new five-year wage settlement is due — and continuance of the existing practice of a wage revision after every five years.

Bellani said the Government had accepted their demand for payment of HRA with effect from January 1, 1998, but not the other demand. Instead, it offered two alternatives, which were not acceptable to them. He said since the issues remained unresolved in the four-day talks with the port managements from July 26 to July 29, deliberations were held with the Union Surface Transport Minister on Monday. But these also ended in a deadlock.
