VADODARA, Oct 21: Nemesis has finally caught up with Hema Chemicals, a Gorwa-based company that has been dumping highly hazardous waste in the open. The company has closed down production following orders from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board.

Company owner Manubhai Patel, confirming this to Express Newsline on Thursday, said he was not sure when production would resume. Water and electricity connections would be cut off by Friday, he said.

Last week, the Board had asked the company to encapsule and dispose the waste it had dumped in the nearby areas following complaints of various ailments by residents. Many workers are also suffering from nasal septum perforation.

Since the law banning dumping came into effect in 1986, the company will have to dispose of the waste it has been dumping since then.

Sources said on an average the company dumped not less than two trucks ever day all these years. Patel said it was difficult to quantify the waste.
