A week after the World Health Organisation WHO warned of a world-wide polio threat following the outbreak in Uttar Pradesh, the virus has surfaced in Mumbai.

Tests conducted on 9-year-old Nazli Shaikh, from Govandi, at the Indian Council of Medical Research8217;s Enterovirus Research Centre ERC in Mumbai on Monday, have shown that she has contracted the virus, said State Health Department officials. Authorities suspect the girl, who had gone to UP two months ago, may have contracted the virus there.

8220;Though she was part of the pulse polio campaign, we suspect that her immunity level has dropped in the past four years. During her visit to UP, she seems to have contracted the infection. While the exact strain will be known tomorrow, 99 per cent, it matches with the one found in UP,8217;8217; said Dr Prakash Doke, Director of Health Services, Maharashtra.

Earlier this year, tests done in March on sewage water in the city found two wild polio virus strains. Genetic sequencing conducted by scientists of the ERC confirmed that the strains had their origin in UP.
