The third storey of the building was under construction. More than 10 labourers were living inside the premises. ``Around 8.30 p.m., there was a loud noise and we rushed out to see the building reduced to rubble,'' said neighbour Asim Begh.Rescue work was delayed as the only way to reach the building was through a congested lane where not more than one person can walk cross at a time. However, before the fire department officials reached the spot, the residents had started rescue operations. The residents tried to clear the area, brick by brick, pulling out the injured labourers one after the other. The injured were rushed to LNJP hospital. The rescue operations were on till late in the night and the policemen did not rule out the possibility of a rise in the number of casualties. Immediate neighbours were asked to vacate their homes as the rescue workers suspected that the collapse might have caused cracks in the adjacent buildings.
