
Poachers in Kanha, one of the best tiger reserves in the country, nearly succeeded in trapping a large male tiger in the Kisli range, a couple of days ago.
Sources said more than one trap was laid in the core area. The tiger escaped by extricating itself from the traps when labourers working in the area approached it.
PCCF wildlife P B Gangopadhyay said that there was no apparent injury marks on the tiger. He admitted that it was a matter of concern that poachers were active despite preventive steps.
8220;We have received clues that poachers could be hiding in Chhattisgarh,8221; he said without elaborating on the combing operation undertaken by the two states.
Last December, a male tiger was found dragging an iron trap. Forest officials claimed that patrolling had been intensified in the park since then but the recovery of more than one traps has made the department sit up. Ironically, the last incident came to light when a team from Dehradun-based Wildlife Institute of India was in the tiger reserve.
