PM’s visit a failure: AGP

The AGP dismissed the enthusiasm generated among the Congress by PM Manmohan Singh's recent visit to Assam.

The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Wednesday dismissed the enthusiasm generated among the Congress by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s recent visit to Assam stating that it was a “total failure” as it did not “prevail on the burning issues faced by the state, including the influx problem.”

“The so-called enthusiasm among the Congress over the visit and the package is misplaced as the Prime Minister failed to touch major issues faced by the state,” party MP Sarbananda Sonowal told reporters in Guwahati.

The party leader alleged that the “so-called package” was just a “face saving statement” as the visit of Dr Singh was a “total failure.”

Sonowal alleged that the Prime Minister failed to announce anything substantial on how to tackle the large scale infiltration from Bangladesh and the recent reaction from various organisations in the state over the issue.

“This shows that the Congress does not want to harm its vote bank”, he alleged.

The Prime Minister, he alleged, had also managed to ignore the issue of border fencing and the ULFA problem.

“The UPA government it seems is compromising on unity and integrity by ignoring the threat posed by fundamentalist forces in the country”, Sonowal said.
