VADODARA, July 30: Cellular phones may have revolutionised the Indian communications industry, but they remain a high-priced option for those always on the move. Offering a cost-effective alternative, though within a specified area, is an innovative Public Mobile Radio Trunking Service PMRTS by SmartMobile, a Motorola-Bhilwara Joint Venture.

Talking to Express Newsline at a Road Show on Radio Trunking in the city on Thursday, Marketing Manager of Smartalk Limited Rudolf D8217;Souza said, 8220;This is a user-friendly technology effective in improving business productivity, as proven the world over. By using two-way mobile trunking radios it allows a group of people to communicate with each other even when all or some of them are mobile thus ensuring instantaneous and simultaneous communication8221;. Radio trunking uses radio frequencies for communication between two points.

The service operator is licensed by the government to set up the necessary telecommunications hardware, which enables the subscribers to communicate within a given coverage area in complete privacy at the push of a button.

Mobile communication through radio trunking, however, is possible only within city limits or at the outskirts. But at an estimated cost of Rs 1,200 monthly, the service is being pegged as a more viable option to mobile phones.

D8217;Souza said that industries around Vadodara, especially in areas like Halol and Savli, were most likely to benefit from this mode of communication. Presently, SmartMobile services are being availed by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, zilla panchayats and companies like Sun Pharmaceuticals and Dupont.
