MUMBAI, FEB 17: Share values remained slightly subdued on the Bombay Stock Exchange today in volatile trading on alternative bouts of buying and selling mainly caused by fresh political uncertainty. The Sensex lost 8 points. A few software scrips attracted fresh buying. Others closed with small to modest changes.

The BSE sensitive index started steady at 3342.28 but dropped during the mid-session and touched a low of 3280.68. The Sensex, however, later recovered most of the losses to close at 3336.42, with a net loss of 8.26 points from yesterday8217;s close of 3344.68. The BSE-100 index ended lower at 1477.59 from the previous level of 1478.42.

Brokers said that the reports of an ally in the ruling coalition has withdrawn its support to the government mainly triggered-off fresh selling during the mid-session. The foreign institutional investors FIIs and local funds extending lukewarm support. FIIs bought at the end small lots of Larsen, IPCL and Pentafour Software, while speculative activity was witnessedon the counters of Satyam Computers, Zee Telefilms and Pentafour Software. Tata Tea and Hindustan Lever came under selling pressure from domestic funds.

The total volume of business was remarkably higher at Rs 1929.42 crore from yesterday8217;s turnover of Rs 1605.33 crore. Pentafour Software continued to lead with a turnover of Rs 333.12 crore, followed by Satyam Computer Rs 186.87 crore, ITC Rs 153.89 crore, Tata Tea Rs 97.89 crore and Zee Telefilms Rs 88.63 crore.

Pentafour Software gained by Rs 69.50 to Rs 939.50 and Satyam Computer by Rs 23.25 to Rs 989.ITC dropped by Rs 18.75 to Rs 832.25, Tata Tea by Rs 10.75 to Rs 452.75 and Zee Telefilms by Rs 14.25 to Rs 648.75.
