Lift sanctions, Pak will sign CTBT

Dawn: The chairman of the standing committee of senate on foreign affairs, Akram Zaki, said on Monday that Pakistan was ready to sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty before September 24, provided all sanctions and embargoes imposed on the country were lifted and it was given a firm assurance of a safe future. He said the signing of the treaty would be decided in view of the national and international scenarios, but the national interest would be given top priority while making any decision on CTBT. The signing could also be linked to the signing of the CTBT by India.

Responding to a question about the shooting down of the Pak navy aircraft, Zaki said the issue would be taken to the international court but it was being taken to the UN first.

Kashmir operations made us losers

Nation: The Kashmir dispute has been an endemic problem since 1947. This jugular vein of Pakistan has been in India8217;s grip and Pakistan8217;s attempt to secure it in thepast ended in terrible bloodshed. In fact, all our initiatives in 1948, 1965 and 1971 and the present operation in Kargil took us away from our objectives and each time we found ourselves in a losing position on the negotiating table. Interestingly there are some similarities in all our wars with India: Each time economic pressure and threat of total war has dissuaded us from following our aims; each time our leadership8217;s impatience has resulted in an impetuous action and hasty retreat; and each time our weakness of lack of objectivity 8212; whether we wanted a military or political solution of the problem 8212; and lack of consensus in the power structure have come to the forefront.
