CHANDIGARH, Feb 21: The two Punjab Engineering College PEC students who were booked by the police on Saturday for allegedly attacking and injuring two undergraduates of the Government Medical College, Sector 32, at the Aravalli Hostel in PEC have been placed under suspension. The college authorities will also hold an inquiry into the incident that reportedly occurred after midnight on Friday.
Kamal Sharma 20 and Hemant Sharma 21 were reportedly attacked by a group of about eight boys armed with hockey sticks and iron rods. Police sources said that the group was led by Rajan Jindal and Vikas Gupta, both students of the PEC. While Kamal Sharma has suffered a fracture in his wrist and a serious eye injury for which he was operated upon yesterday, Hemant was administered seven stitches in his head.
quot; These boys had come for a dance party held as a part of our annual festival, Euphoria 99, on January 9. They were drunk and Hemant, who was our chief coordinator, stopped them. About a few days ago they got to know that we were staying in the PEC itself, they came in a drunken state and attacked us,quot; Kamal Sharma told Newsline.
Meanwhile, Prof Rajnish Prakash, Principal of the PEC, stated this evening: quot;I was out of station and have just returned. As an immediate measure we have suspended the two students involved but this is no punishment. We will hold an inquiry and strict action will followquot;.
The police have booked Jindal, Gupta and others for quot;rioting, trespass and causing hurtquot;, the area SHO said. He added that no arrests had been made.
