8226; The unrealistic truce forced between Sourav Ganguly and Greg Chappell by the BCCI president is not only an illusion, but will culminate in disaster. Some players in the Indian team will now be compelled to take sides with the captain or the coach. The unwarranted outburst of Harbhajan Singh against the coach is a pointer and the BCCI has remained silent on this issue. Sourav Ganguly is not only out of form, but has also become incapable of steering the Indian team. It is proper for him to go on his own, rather than cling to his position amid controversy.

Shut it down

8226; After hockey, it now seems to be the turn of India8217;s cricket establishment to invite closure. That is the only way out of the terrible mess in which the game has landed in India after the famous developments between the coach and captain on the one hand and the BCCI tamasha on the other.

Left, like BJP

8226; I refer to India8217;s decision to vote against Iran at the IAEA. Our foreign policies should be flexible, and not rigid. But considering that Iran has been a good neighbour for long, it would have been better if India had abstained from voting. If Pakistan, which is more dependent on the US than India, can abstain, why not India? As for the reactions of the BJP and Left, they are different sides of the same coin. One is against everything the UPA does and the other is against everything that has to do with the US.

The war within

8226; Apropos of the piece 8216;1857: The great debate8217; IE, September 28, but for the disunity among the various princely states and the religious and caste subgroups at the time of the first war of independence, India would have achieved full freedom in 1857. The freedom fighters lost this war despite having fought valiantly, with scant resources at their disposal, due more to the treachery of some Indian army battalions who not only did not join the freedom fighters but also fought them alongside the British.

Passive people

8226; Even the recent deluge doesn8217;t seem to have woken up the citizenry of Mumbai. They are still as passive as they were. For instance, most arterial and other roads are ridden with potholes, inconveniencing everyone who dares to travel on them with the ambition of reaching their destination on time. Just because citizens are passive, the government and the BMC are least bothered. We must wake up to our city8217;s living conditions. Otherwise, worse is in store for those of us condemned to live in it.

What Greg must do

8226; Ganguly has disclosed that it was Greg Chappell8217;s suggestion to him to relinquish the captaincy that gave him the determination to bat well in Zimbabwe. Therefore, what Chappell needs to do is to keep making that suggestion to Ganguly before every match, so that Ganguly8217;s resolve improves and his batting performance becomes more consistent!
