PUNE, Aug 26: Encouraged by the response of the citizens for the 8220;garbage-bin free ward8221; which has been started in Pradhikaran, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation PCMC plans to implement a similar scheme on a trial basis in at least one ward of the remaining three divisional zones after the elections.

The scheme was begun in Pradhikaran ward number one from August 15, and it covers nearly 3000 houses. All the 39 garbage bins which were earlier kept in the ward have been removed. Instead the garbage is collected daily from the houses between 9 a.m. and 12 noon by the workers of the sanitation department. The garbage is collected in two trucks and immediately disposed off at the Moshi garbage depot.

The objective behind implementing the scheme is to maintain cleanliness in the area, says Additional Municipal Commissioner R.B. Konde. The sight of a overflowing garbage bin sickens everyone, besides it creates unhygienic conditions. The response to the scheme has been encouraging and plans are afoot to start similar schemes, after the elections are over. In the B zone, it is to be implemented in Chinchwad Sudarshannagar while wards in the Kasarwadi-Bhosari and the rural zones are yet to be decided.

In Pradhikaran, Thursdays and Sundays have been fixed for collecting waste collected from gardens. The PCMC had earlier planned to provide special bags for garbage collection in each of the houses. The bags have not yet been provided, but still the residents have been assisting the staff. Corporator Dr .Geeta Aphale said that the residents do not segregate the wet and the dry garbage but they will be urged to do so. Meetings with residents are being organised to seek suggestions regarding the scheme, she said.
