To do away with a number of regulatory bodies in higher education, the Yashpal Committee, appointed by the National Knowledge Commission, has suggested that an autonomous body dealing with higher education be set up.

In a meeting with the Vice-Chancellors of colleges and universities of the state at Jadavpur University on Wednesday, the commission sought their views on the matter. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, Suranjan Das, said: 8220;Although the committee has suggested a regulatory body, it may lead to over-centralisation .8221;

8220;Some of the recommendations of the Yashpal Committee like interdisciplinary research and undergraduate education at all the universities are very important for the higher education,8221; said Siddhartha Datta, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Jadavpur University.

The other recommendations of the committee include making IITs full-fledged universities, so that teaching of all the disciplines of science and engineering could be carried on along with other streams of social sciences.

The committee also held the Jadavpur University as a model of a technology-based university with high quality of education in humanities.

The committee is also of the opinion that inspection and monitoring of educational institutions should be reduced drastically and the accredited institutions should be given more leverage.
