NASHIK, Jan 11: It was an unprecedented scene at the Lasalgaon wholesale marketyard today as auctions took place under police bandobust fearing attacks by farmers protesting the plummeting wholesale price of the commodity.

Last Friday enraged farmers had attacked traders with onions as the prices hovered at a low of Rs 400 per quintal. As the markets opened after weekend, police were seen keeping an eye on activities in the Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee.

The downtrend continued today as rates ranged from Rs 401 to Rs 511 per quintal as onion arrivals hit 11,000 quintals.
