SURAT, June 11: Notorious criminal Durabhkhan Qasimkhan Pathan from Vyara was arrested on Wednesday by the Vyara police under the Prevention of Anti Social Activities PASA Act for his role in whipping up communal tension in the town during the first week of June. He was arrested after District Magistrate Ramesh M Shah directed the Vyara police to do so.

Pathan was arrested and send to the Porbandar district jail even as he was in police custody at the Vyara police station. He was arrested on June 2 for throwing eggs at a temple being built at the old bus stand area of the town. District superintendent of police B D Vaghela had earlier recommended the arrest of the criminal to the district magistrate.

While property worth lakhs was damaged, when mobs engaged in store throwing, burning of property and arson, four policemen along with 50 others were injured in violence that spread over four days from June 1 to 4.

District collector and magistrate R M Shah, while issuing the orders stated that it had been established that Pathan had a major role to play in the violence that rocked the town for four days. It was he who threw eggs at the Nanji Dada Mandir being built at the old bus stand area, he said.

The Vyara police added that a number of cases including rioting, attempt to murder and extortion were already registered against Pathan in the past three years and there was evidence of his involvement in the communal riots that rocked the city in the wake of the Babri Masjid demolition. Pathan has also encroached upon 2,050 sq metres of nagarpalika land.
