8226; This refers to the editorial 8216;Winter of 628217;. The voters in Jammu and Kashmir have displayed tremendous faith in democracy and rebuffed the separatists8217; call. The people of J038;K have left no doubt that they see in electoral democracy, however imperfect, the best possible means to address their multiple problems.

The country is now looking to Omar Abdullah to provide honest and capable leadership and free the traumatised state from the politics of competitive chauvinism.

8226; India8217;s strategists must recognise the gravity of the security situation and realise that J038;K is not like any other part of the country, where a political experiment can be easily tired out. The Indian military has never compromised on national security, yet remaining apolitical.

But across the border, the Pakistan army continues to be political. Its desire to always control Pakistan8217;s foreign policy compels it to victimise India by proxy. With a new government taking over in J038;K, it8217;s time India made a fresh start on Kashmir and Pakistan, yet being absolutely vigilant.

Lip service?

8226; This refers to 8216;Dismay in Delhi over America8217;s Pak blinkers8217;.nbsp;Developments following the Mumbai attacks have proved that the efforts of the US and the UK in containing Pakistan are fruitless. Pakistan has shown an impudent face and ignored international opinion by showing few signs of cooperation.

We should clearly understand that the high-pressure diplomacy by Condoleezza Rice and Gordon Brown was nothing more than lip service.

Red alert

8226; The Indian comrades lost no time in calling upon the government to sever all military ties with Israel for the latter8217;s Gaza action. However, such 8220;trivial8221; issues like the frequent Chinese incursions into Indian territory, China8217;s claim over Arunachal Pradesh and its firm support to Pakistan obviously do not merit any attention from the comrades8217; point of view. About time the country called their bluff and rejected their pet concerns.

8226; This refers to 8216;Israel pounds Hamas again8230;8217;. Statements by the Israeli defence and foreign ministers are worrying. Israel must stop the strikes at once. Bombs and shells never bring peace.

The ongoing operation is yet another instance of hegemonic abuse of power. Moreover, such collateral damage comes after the impoverishing blockade of Gaza.
