Opener Craig Cumming scored 43 in New Zealand8217;s second innings and the hosts needed just under three days to beat Sri Lanka by five wickets and take a 1-0 lead on Saturday here.

Set 119 to win, New Zealand slump to 68/4 but Nathan Astle 24 and Jacob Oram 9 steadied the ship. After Astle fell to Muttiah Muralitharan, Brendon McCullum steered New Zealand to victory.
