ROHTAK, June 3: The B. D. Sharma Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences authorities here today extended the deadline from 12 noon to 7 am tomorrow to enable the institute’s striking nurses to resume their duty.

Stating this, institute director-principal D. S. Dubey claimed that 52 nursing sisters and 80 staff nurses had joined duty in the morning shift today. He said strict action would be taken against the nurses who failed to resume their duty by the extended deadline.Meanwhile, the institute’s striking nurses intensified their agitation with two of them going on a fast-unto-death this morning.

The nurses, along with those working in state government hospitals, are on an indefinite strike since May 21 in support of their demands, including new pay-scales.

On Tuesday, Haryana Health Commissioner and Secretary Virender Nath in a letter faxed to the institute director had said that the concession of considering the period of absence from duty by the institute nurses as leave of the kind due would be available to only those nurses who joined duty by 12 noon.

Meanwhile, striking government nurses had in a press release yesterday declared intensification of their agitation due to the indifferent attitude of the authorities towards their demands.
