Now Dhoni has some competition

It has been 10 ODIs since MS Dhoni got his last half-century and with each passing game, the wicket-keeper-batsman has looked like he8217;s running out of steam. Now there8217;s another problem, at least going by evidence from the Challenger series: the competition is trying hard to catch up, be it Dinesh Kaarthick or Parthiv Patel.

India Green8217;s Patel cracked a defiant 43 in 38 balls to topscore against India Blue last night, when nobody else managed to survive the burden of chasing 381 runs. Today, he scored a defiant 69 against India Red off 80 balls, which included seven boundaries. Until cramps took over, the diminutive batsman looked extremely at ease against the likes of Zaheer Khan, S Sreesanth, Murali Kartik and Ramesh Powar. That was after Kaarthick walloped India Green with a 68-ball 85, consisting of eight fours and two sixes, to help his side reach 317.

So has Dhoni spotted them on the rearview mirror? 8220;There should be competition and it only helps somebody get better,8217;8217; he says. Insisting that each match is a 8220;different8217;8217; ballgame, he explains that every one of them, in the recent past, has thrown him into a new situation to which he8217;s tried to adapt.

8220;There have been times when I8217;ve walked in with the top-order contributing well enough, only for me to accelerate the scoring. At other times, I8217;ve walked in under pressure situations. One has to keep learning with every game,8217;8217; he says.

Kaarthick, for one, knows there8217;s still some catching up to do. 8220;With his style of batting, he8217;s definitely raised the bar,8217;8217; he says, while Patel admits that Dhoni has been a revelation of sorts to India8217;s one-day team. But if you go by Dhoni8217;s line, the more the two perform, the better it will be 8212; for him.
