While denying that there was any threat to the UPA Government, Congress Secretary Digvijay Singh on Sunday said his party was not afraid of facing an election. Singh was replying to queries about the possibility of early polls following the ultimatum given by the Left.

8220;The Congress is a party that is always prepared for an election. A political party will have to close shop if it is afraid of polls,8221; Singh said, and urged the CPIM to spell out the point where the feel that the sovereignty of the country has been compromised in the Indo-US nuclear deal.

He said the Left parties were opposing the deal because they dislike the US.

Singh also ruled out the possibility of an election and said the differences would be sorted out. He charged the BJP with double standards for attacking the nuclear deal. Singh said that Jaswant Singh, during his stint as the Foreign Minister, had tried to clinch the deal but had failed. 8220;Now the same party is opposing it. It8217;s just for the sake of it,8221; he said.

Singh, who is the in-charge of Bihar, was here to submit a memorandum to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar alleging that the state Government had miserably failed to extend succour to the flood victims in the state.
