The Government on Monday sought a consensus on the National Rural Employment Guarantee Bill with Water Resources Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunshi telling Lok Sabha that it was the first step to instill confidence among the jobless. ‘‘We know there is no magic formula to tackle problems like poverty and unemployment,’’ he said.

Domestic violence bill

The bill to protect women from domestic violence was introduced in the Lok Sabha today. The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Bill, 2005, covers even unmarried women who may have shared a household with the accused. Introduced by Minister of State for HRD, Kanti Singh, the bill includes under ‘‘domestic violence’’ actual abuse or even threat of abuse. Magistrates can also prevent respondents from entering any place frequented by the aggrieved person, attempting to communicate, isolating assets used by both parties and ‘‘causing violence’’ to relatives who protect her from domestic violence.

With quite large number of important bills, including the National Rural Employment Guarantee Bill, still to be cleared, the government today decided to extend the Monsoon session till August 30, said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. On the women’s reservation bill, the minister said it was still in “infancy stage.”
