Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in Parliament on Monday that his government will not compromise the country8217;s national security to seal a nuclear deal with the United States.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said information vital to national security would not be 8216;compromised in the process of negotiations8217; with the United States on the landmark deal, which would grant international recognition to India8217;s nuclear program.
Talks to finalise the deal have been held up over which of India8217;s nuclear facilities are to be designated as civilian and which ones are to be considered military.
Separating India8217;s tightly entwined civilian and military nuclear programs is key to the deal because the United States has only agreed to recognise India as having a civilian nuclear program8211;not as a legitimate nuclear weapons state.
8220;The decision of what facilities may be identified as civilian will be made by India alone and not by anyone else,8221; Singh told Parliament.
If finalised, the pact would allow the United States to provide nuclear technology and fuel that India needs to meet the energy needs of its booming economy. In return, India has pledged to separate its programs and open the civilian ones to inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
