New election, new symbol

AHMEDNAGAR, Sept 10: Babanrao Pachpute who has contested the past five consecutive Assembly elections with nomination of a new party each time has lived upto his characteristic yet again. This time, he is contesting from Shrigonde constituency as a candidate of the Nationalist Congress Party NCP.

Pachpute had contested his first Assembly election as an independent in 1980 and his election symbol was an umbrella. At that time, Janata Dal had supported his candidature and despite a prevalent Congress wave, he had defeated the Congress nominee Shivajirao Nagawade.

In 1985, Pachpute was a nominee of the Progressive Democratic Alliance and his election symbol was farmer with a plough. Pachpute had then defeated his rival, Nagawade, with a margin of 29,000 votes. In 1990, Pachpute contested the Assembly election as a nominee of the Janata Dal and his symbol was a wheel. During this election as well he defeated Nagawade with a slender margin of 818 votes.

In 1995, Pachpute had successfully contested the Assembly election as a Congress candidates and his election symbol was hand. In the present election, being a NCP candidate, Pachpute8217;s symbol is clock. His rival is again Shivajirao Nagawade who represents the Congress party.

Pachpute8217;s traditional rival, Nagwade, too is contesting the Assembly election as a nominee of the Congress for the fifth time. In 1978 Assembly elections, he had defeated Mohan Gade of the Janata Party. Thereafter he was defeated by Pachpute in three consecutive elections. Barring the exception of 1995, Pachpute and Nagawade have been fighting the electoral battle against each other for the fourth time.
