NDA to impart computer science training to cadets

PUNE, MAY 27: Keeping in mind the advent of technology in future wars, the National Defence Academy has tied up with the Jawaharlal Nehru University JNU to award their cadets a Bachelor of Computer Science BCS degree.

Talking to newsmen here on Tuesday, Lt Gen S B S Kochar, Commandant of NDA, said that they would also be raising another squadron at the Academy to take the present strength of 1,960 cadets to more than 2,000. This is in view of the acute shortage of officers being faced by the armed forces.

Elucidating on the computer science course, Lt. Gen. Kochar said it would help the cadets to adapt to a more hi-tech environment. For the cadets, academics takes up 57 per cent of their 17 hour rigorous schedule. The NDA, which has extensive computer facilities, proposes to acquire more computers in order to extend the Bachelor of Computer Science course to at least 75 per cent of the cadets, he added.

The NDA is one of the two unique training institutes which imparts training to cadets from allthe three services. This is to instill a feeling of camaraderie among these future officers and help better coordination between the three wings during field operations.

In their effort to produce the finest the training combines academics with physical training, drill, service training, sports and voluntary pursuits. Another major addition to the curriculum to the academy8217;s syllabus will be training its cadets in advanced microlite gliding techniques.
