Ahead of a key Indian side reaching the US for what is expected to be the closure talks on 123 agreement for finalising the nuclear deal, the CPI today said 8220;clever formulas and tricky solutions that avoid clear answers should not be allowed to stampede the Indian Government into signing the agreement8221;.
With time running out for the Bush Administration to seal the deal before the President completes the term, a team comprising National Security Adviser M K Narayanan, Foreign Secretary Shiv Shanker Menon, Department of Atomic Energy chief Anil Kakodar and Indian Ambassador to the US Ronen Sen will be holding discussions with a US side from July 16 to 18.
8220;With the US President8217;s term coming to end, there will be a hurry to finalise the deal. But if that fails to take into account India8217;s sovereign interest, we will oppose it,8221; CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan told reporters.
A three-day national executive of the party discussed the deal. It said 8220;attempts are afoot to hustle India into the US nuclear deal8221;. The CPI says that the 8220;provisions of the Hyde Act adopted by the US Congress are totally inconsistent with the July 18 joint statement. It denies India right to reprocess spent nuclear fuel, assured supply of fuel in perpetuity and creation of a strategic fuel reserve8221;.
The party reiterated that Parliament and the Indian people should be taken into confidence about ongoing negotiations and any agreement should be subject to ratification in Parliament.
