Mumbai, Dec 26: Mumbai, hosts Jodhpur, Bhopal and Jiwaji Universities entered the semi-final league of the West Zone inter-varsity hockey tournament at Jodhpur today, according to information reaching here.

Mumbai defeated Shivaji University 2-0, while Jodhpur defeated Laxmibai National Institute of Physical Education by a similar margin. Holders Jiwaji Gwalior drubbed Pune 4-0, skipper Nafis Raja scoring a hat-trick.

All four winners have qualified for the 16-team all-India phase, at Ludhiana from January 12.

Mumbai took time to settle down on the gravel surface. Left out Ashish Gonsalves opened the account, pushing home from a melee in the 34th minute following Mumbai8217;s fourth penalty corner. After the break, Prem Kumar Singh combined well with Gurmeet Singh Rao and scooped in the second.

Tanvi, Prajakta lead
TanviThakur and Prajakta Yevale shared the lead with three points apiece in the girls under-12 event of the Parle G chess festival 8217;99 at St Stanislaus School today. Players opted for safety and agreed to split points on the second day, leaving seven girls bunched in second place with 2.5 ponts.In girls u-8, four players Sai Ghate, Rajvi Mehta, Macrina Lobo and Kavya Pai lead the table with three points each.

In boys under-8, 14 players shared the lead with three points. Fancied players Saurabh Naik and Joshua Michael scored easy victories over their rivals. Rushat Agrawal of Bandra Chess Club scored an upset victory over top seed Siddarth Kotian.
