
Hotels to go on Statewide strike on January 12
Hotels, restaurants, beer bars and permit rooms all over Maharashtra will observe a day-long strike on January 12, protesting against the State Government8217;s hike in sales tax. According to the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations, Maharashtra, even the most essential requisites of daily life like salt had not been spared the sales tax net. The increase had affected all the raw materials of the hotel industry like LPG, edible oil, sugar, masala, bread and vanaspati. The 20 per cent increase in liquor was a further burden on the trade which was already experiencing a heavy decline of up to 50 per cent of business.
Head of Cardiological Society
Noted interventional cardiologist Anil Kumar has been elected president of the prestigious Cardiological Society of India CSI for the year 2000. He succeeds Upendra Batra, a former Professor of Cardiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Anil Kumar, a consultantcardiologist with the Bombay Hospital, was earlier Professor of Cardiology, Grant Medical College and J J Group of Hospitals.
Science exhibition at Dadar west
An exhibition on astronomy covering aspects of our solar system, space research and observational astronomy inaugurated by well-known science writer Professor Mohan Apte opened on Saturday at Dadar Sarvajanik Vachnalaya, Dhuru Hall, Chhabildas Lane, Dadar West. MUMBAI: The millennium party organised by the We Care Trust on January 2 for 400 thalassaemic children was a grand success. Children from St George Hospital, Sion Hospital, KEM, Wadia and Nanavati were able to meet newly crowned Miss World Yukta Mookhey who gave her autograph to all of them. An awareness van was inaugurated by Dadi Maa Hari Devi fitted with an audio-visual system to bringawareness among college students and common public.
