Nearly six months after an industrial explosion at Sigachi Industries Ltd killed 54 people and left several injured, the Sangareddy district police arrested the company’s managing director on Saturday.

Confirming the arrest, Paritosh Pankaj, Superintendent of Police, Sangareddy, said the managing director, Amit Raj Sinha, has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

The arrest comes in the wake of repeated adverse observations by the Telangana High Court in a public interest litigation over the alleged slow progress of police investigation and inaction on the part of authorities against the company management. The court had summoned the investigation officer, Patancheru DSP, on December 9 and posted the matter for further hearing on December 30.

Meanwhile, Sigachi Industries Ltd issued a press statement saying that the company is fully cooperating with the investigation. “We are cooperating fully with the legal process while also ensuring that our rights under the law are respected. We will keep all concerned parties informed as and when there are meaningful developments in the case, subject to legal advisories given the matter is subjudice,” it said.

The company also reiterated its support for the families of the deceased, injured, and others impacted by the incident.
