
Sept 28: Jungle training camps will be conducted by a military camp at Mahabaleshwar and Matheran for high school students during the Diwali vacations. The camp will train students in horse-riding, rifle-shooting and commando-brigade.
Inauguration
Eminent scientist Prof Yashpal will inaugurate the 40th annual technical convention on 8220;Internet and the Road Ahead8221; at Yashwantrao Chavan Auditorium on September 30. The convention has been organised by the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, a society for the promotion of electronics, telecommunications and infotech in India.
Award
Prof Ram Joshi, veteran educationist and former vice-chancellor of the Mumbai University, has been selected for the Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar8217; award for his outstanding contributions to educational activities in Maharashtra. The award comprises a cash prize of one lakh rupees and a scroll of honour instituted by Chaturang Pratishthan.8217;
Auto exhibition
Auto Mech Tech-97, the second international exhibition and conference on the automobile industry, will be held from October 16. Over 80 companies from India and abroad are expected to participate.
Conference
A symposium on food technology was held at the BARC on September 25 and 26. Food technologists urged the central government to make food processing laws more flexible to facilitate growth. Many speakers stressed the need to make a transition from recycling to the reuse of food containers, as packaging eats up 50 per cent of the total cost.
