Citizens8217; body holds dharna

  • A silent dharna was organised by the Citizens8217; Organisation for Public Opinion on Friday at Hutatma Chowk to protest against killings of four children in the Coimbatore bomb blasts. Around 100 school children of South Mumbai schools participated in the event.
  • Ceat reopens Bhandup plant

  • Ceat Ltd8217;s Bhandup plant re-opened on February 9 after a temporary shutdown since January 27. The company management and the workers8217; union had agreed on a planned shutdown of the factory for 11 working days to enable a total overhaul of key plant and machinery to help clear accumulated stocks due to the recession in the automobile industry, said a company statement.
  • NIC settles 190 accident claims

  • The Mumbai regional office of the National Insurance Company NIC has recently settled 190 pending cases of motor accident claims and has paid a whopping Rs 1.55 crore to the applicants. The cases were pending with the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal MACT,Mumbai for a period of more than five years.

  • Dattatreya Waghmare, independent candidate from Mumbai North East constituency, today opted out of the race in favour of Congress candidate Gurudas Kamat. Waghmare was one of the two Dalit officials who had resigned from government service following the Ramabai Nagar violence on July 11, 1997. His resignation was turned down and he retired a few months later on reaching superannuation.
  • Amritanandamayi Devi to visit city

  • World renowned spiritual teacher Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, endearingly called quot;Ammaquot; by her devotees, will be visiting Mumbai from March 1 to March 7. Her first programme will be held on March 1 at the municipal playground behind Gujarat Society Playground Road, Vile Parle. On March 2, she will address a gathering at Patkar Hall, New Marine Lines in the morning and Indian Gymkhana ground, Matunga east in the evening.
  • Mumbai varsity wins Youth Fest

  • The University ofMumbai has once again won the inter-university National Youth Festival in Cultural Competitions held at Chandigarh this year. This is a fourth successive victory for the varsity. The Mumbai University students secured a massive 52 points in the finals in various events such as classical instrumental, group song, dance and one-act play. An elated Vice-Chancellor Dr Snehalata Deshmukh has stated that this was possible only due to the dedication of students, the pro-vice chancellor and the director of students8217; welfare.
  • G P Sippy wins Citizens8217; Award

  • Film producer G P Sippy was awarded the National Citizen8217;s Award by President K R Narayanan on February 7, 1998 in recognition of his efforts as a freedom fighter and his life-long contribution to film-making.
