HC ruling on Gawli today

The state government has opposed the application for police protection filed by underworld don Arun Gawli in the Bombay High Court, today. Gawli had filed a writ petition saying he feared a threat to his life from rival gangs, especially the Dawood Ibrahim gang.

Advocate General C J sawant told the court that Gawli had engaged in criminal activities and to provide him police protection would send out the wrong signals. This protection could also be misued, he said.

Advocate Ramrao Adik, who appeared for Gawli, told the court that his client is a law abiding citizen and has written to the commissioner of police as well as the state of Maharashtra demanding police protection. However it was refused.

He pointed out that state government has also provided Z-plus security to Dagdu Bandu Sakpal, a Shiv Sena vibhag pramukh who had several cases registered against him. He also said city Samajwadi Party President Abu Azim Asmi was also involved in criminal activities despitewhich he has been given police protection. The advocate general however said Sakpal and Asmi had been provided security on the basis of intelligence reports that they were facing threats to their lives.
