Mendonca surrenders
The dismissed president of the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Council, Gilbert Mendonca who was evading arrest by the Thane municipal police surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate this evening. The state government had dismissed Mendonca from the president8217;s post following numerous irregularities in the council. He was named the main accused in assault on Janata Dal leader Milan Mhatre following which the Thane police had spread dragnet for him. The courts had dismissed his anticipatory bail application and declared him absconding. The Thane district police chief Ashok Kamte had announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for information about him. It was around 3 pm that Mendonca surrendered. He was remanded to two days police custody.
