NEW DELHI, OCT 6: The Multimedia revolution is giving a new lease of life to thousands of original Indian manuscripts, paintings and other art objects by saving them for posterity in digital form in CD-ROMs and on the Internet.

A unique project undertaken by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts IGNCA with UNDP help to preserve the rich cultural heritage through Multimedia is slowly changing the very concept of conservation.

quot;In the last five years, we have digitalised thousands of slides on old paintings and sculptures and manuscripts to make them available all over the world on CD-ROMs,quot; says Sanjay Goel, director, Multimedia, IGNCA.

quot;We also have our site on Internet on which we plan to put part of the material being digitalised, quot; says Goel.

quot;It is bringing the 5,000-year old Indian history at the doorsteps for the general public and helping in education, research and laying down standards, quot; he says.

Using audio, video, text, and graphics on one platform, Multimedia offers a holisticapproach and has potential to allow users to hear and see the past.
