PUNE, April 11: Power supply to the city was disrupted for over four hours on Saturday evening following the development of faults on two high tension wires at the MSEB Lonikand substation.

The disruption put citizens to great inconvenience as they had to do without fans and air coolers in the heat wave sweeping the city. Further, water supply to the city in the evening was also severely affected.

The city receives its power supply from Lonikand substation through 220 KV high tension line. The problem arose after the line between Lonikand and Theur developed some fault this afternoon. Hence, the burden of unsupplied power fell on the high tension line between Lonikand and Bhosari. The latter could not carry the excess power, became defunct thereby blocking the power supply to the city.

The fault occurred around 2.30 p.m. In order to make up for the power loss, load shedding was carried out in phases in all parts of the city. The situation worsened in the evening when all the lines supplying power to the city from Lonikand developed faults. As a result power to the entire city was cut off. The supply could only be restored in phases to all parts of the city from 7.30 p.m. onwards.

Meanwhile, the evening water supply to the entire Pune city and neigbouring Pimpri- Chinchwad was cut off on Saturday due to power failure. The civic officials made it clear that the water supply would be normal from Sunday.

Official sources said the power went off at Parvati Water Works at about 1.30 p.m affecting the pumping of water from the canal. They said the water could not be released since water tanks were not adequately filled.

PCMC officials said the evening water supply in the township was affected since power went off at 3.30 p.m at Ravet water works.
