Bharat Ratna Mother Teresa has left behind very powerful images that humanity cannot easily forget; they have now become symbols for the contemporary man who would look for models in altruism in actual life.
Day in and day out she was with the most forgotten and uncared for of the society, those invisible to the rest of the normal society. People on the margins do not count; they may or may not there, it is hardly anyone8217;s business to get into their messy world. If at all there is any sign of attention shown to them, it is all for the wrong reasons as they are considered at best as a nuisance to the rest of the world.
It is this insensitivity of human beings towards their fellow beings that provoked Mother Teresa to venture out into the deep, to leave behind the secured enclosures of Loreto Convent in Kolkata and move right amidst the most wretched of the earth who possessed nothing but penury in abundance. Mother Teresa walked alone for a while, for it wasn8217;t at all sensible for a young religious woman to take upon herself something which others would dread to think of. And yet she made the journey, trusting in God as she would often recall, to the by lanes and alleys of Kolkata, gathering people of every hue, instilling in them a sense of human dignity and honor.
Mother8217;s steps were firm; they could not be swept away even in the strong currents of opposition, cynicism, and derision. On the contrary, her steadfastness and perseverance won her more friends who flocked to her side, extending helping hands in nursing the dying, caring for the uncared for and giving hope of life to abandoned babies. What began as a little stream has now turned into a large river having many tributaries sustaining the hope of those who would otherwise be consigned to the abyss of despair and destitution.
September 5 is the day she was called from this earth to her eternal home, having fought her battle of regaining some measure of dignity to the dejected of the earth. She ran her race of reaching out to the heartbroken very well, and the crown of glory, she believed, awaited her in her heavenly abode. Her faith is recognised by the whole world, as she would be raised to the status of the blessed in the St. Peter8217;s Basilica, Rome, on October 19. She spent her entire life for others so that they may have life. Wherever she went, she permeated the divine presence, whenever she spoke, she conveyed the divine power and whatever she did, she did with a touch of divine love. Ma, tujhe salam.
