CHENNAI, DEC 27: In what is considered to be a significant event with a potential to herald a new era in the annals of Tamil Nadu political history, AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalitha and TMC president G K Moopanar, who were hitherto poles apart politically, shared a common dais at an Iftaar party hosted by the former here on Sunday.
Speaking to mediapersons during the party, Jayalalitha declined to comment on the possible consequences of the event as it was only a 8220;personal gathering8221;.To a question on possible realignment of political forces in the State, she said it would be considered only at the time of elections.On private member8217;s Bills proposed for introducing a common civil code and imposing ban on slaughtering of animals, she said her party would oppose them.
On whether the occasion was an indication to a scheme of things to come, a cryptic remark came from Moopanar that everyone was aware of the 8220;happenings8221; in the State.
Earlier, addressing a gathering at the party, Jayalalitha saidthe AIADMK would always champion the rights and privileges of Muslims. She reiterated her commitment to support and safeguard the interests of minorities.She appealed that it was the duty of everyone to ensure communal harmony and amity while entering the third millennium.
She pointed out that as the people had been bonded together as one country, there was nothing to lose but everything to gain by developing a mindset of living together harmoniously as brothers and sisters.
Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, senior AIADMK leader V R Nedunchezhian, CPM State secretary N Sankariah, CPI State secretary R Nallakannu, Indian National League State president M A Latheef, and UCPI State president T Pandian participated.
