SANGRUR, Dec 13: Mohd Salim and Nancy won the men's and women's singles titles respectively in the Ist Arun Memolrial Punjab State Major Ranking Badminton Tournament at Ranbir Club here today.The men's singles final turned out to be a one-sided affair. Neeraj Bansal of Jalandhar was off colour today. Salim of Sangrur was in top for and he played like a champion. He won the final 15-2, 15-7 in just 20 minutes.The women's singles final between Nazma and Nancy was a well-fought encounter. Nancy prevailed over her rival due to her experience. She won 11-0, 6-11, 11-7. Much was expected from Nazma because of her excellent performance in her earlier matches. However, she committed a few errors at the crucial moments which cost her the match. Nancy took just five minutes to win the first game at 11-0. Nazma fought back in the second game. She played like a champion in the second game which she won 11-6. The final game was a close affair. Both players fought for every point till 7-7. After that Nancy reeled off four points in a row to win the game and match.Top-seeded Gurmukh and Chander Deep of Patiala justified their seeding when they outclassed the Patiala pair of Navdeep and Munish 15-11, 11-15, 15-4.Nancy won her second title when she joined Vidhu to defeat Sapna Ratti and Sheel of Jalandhar 17-16, 10-15, 15-10 in a well-contested match which lasted 80 minutes.Chander and Yogita beat Ram Lakhan and Sapna of Jalandhar 11-15, 15-10, 15-7 in the mixed doubles final. Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Anirudh Tewari gave away the prizes.Liberals hockeyPatiala: Thapar academy, Sansarpur will take on Police Range, Ludhiana in the final of the 23rd All India Liberals hockey tournament.
