LUCKNOW, NOVEMBER 7: Investigations into the brutal killing of BJP MLA Nirbhay Pal Sharma hinge on a mobile phone conversation made by Sharma to the police as he was being attacked. The Special Task Force STF which is assisting the police in the case is also looking into a message that flashed on the cellphone of his brother-in-law, former Union minister Kamal Nath, after Sharma8217;s killing.

8220;We8217;re trying to get a lead out of the cryptic message sent to Kamal Nath as he was preparing to go to Saharanpur,8221; a senior STF official said. The message warned Kamal Nath that 8220;aisa bhi hota hai8221;. Investigating officers don8217;t rule out political vendetta as a motive behind the killing.

Kamal Nath has met with the CM as well as the state police chief in Saharanpur. The role of the local police has come under a cloud since they reached late even though Singh informed that he was being attacked. SSP Mukul Goyal and two policemen have been suspended.

The slain MLA had played a crucial role in gathering the support of MLAs of other parties to prop up the then Kalyan Singh government. He was also instrumental in propping up the Rajnath Singh government.

In fact, Sharma had fixed a meeting between the CM and legislators of other parties willing to lent support to Singh8217;s government. The meeting was to have been held in Hardwar, and would have proved Rajnath8217;s repeated assertions that there was no threat to his government after the creation of Uttaranchal.

STF sleuths are also probing rivalry between Sharma and the locally powerful Guddu Kala gang. Two persons of the Kala gang have been taken into custody. But Hemendra Kumar, Principal Secretary home admitted that 8220;There is no progress in the brutal murder so far.8221;
