For Malaysian lawyer Shyama Narayanan Nair, nothing could have been worse than receiving the news that her missing father was dead. Shyama’s 79-year-old father M.M. Narayanan Nair had died on a railway station platform in New Delhi from where his dead body was recovered on June 6. The body was cremated three days after nobody claimed it.

Nair had gone missing from a Kanpur-Delhi train while on a pilgrimage with Shyama and his wife on June 3. Nair was last seen at a bank in Benaras, where he was reported to be in a “collapsing” condition.

While Shyama thought that he would be in Benaras, he had boarded a train to New Delhi where he died on the railway platform.

The Nairs are visibly angry, for they feel that had the police acted in time to trace Nair, the tragedy could have been averted. A heartbroken Shyama has since left for Malaysia with her aged mother.
