How often should I clip my dog8217;s claws?
A dog8217;s only need to be clipped if they become overgrown. Dogs that are exercised a lot on rough or hard ground will normally not need to have their claws clipped. Others may need frequent clipping. Nails that are allowed to grow excessively long cause discomfort in walking and may grow in a curve and even penetrate the pad. It is a good idea to check the claws at least once a month.
Be careful not to cut the quick8217; which contains the blood vessel and will bleed if cut. If the claws is not pigmented it can be seen but if the claws are black, one has to rely on experience. Severely overgrown claws may need to be shortened a bit at a time at intervals of fifteen days because the quick also tends to elongate with the claw. Cut with special nail clippers as scissors will split and splinter the nail. You may need help to restrain your dog while you trim its claws.
