Militants ambush security convoy, kill 15 personnel

Fifteen India Reserve Battalion personnel were killed and six injured when heavily-armed militants ambushed their convoy in interior Bishnupur district on Sunday. The ambush took place at around 10 am. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack as yet.

While 14 personnel were killed on the spot, one died at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, where most of the injured have been admitted.

The convoy, comprising four trucks and two smaller vehicles, was returning from an area domination patrolling in Tamenglong district, where polling for the final phase of the Assembly elections took place on Friday. Bishnupur SP K Jayanta said the militants used grenade launchers and automatic weapons.

8220;The truck leading the convoy was the worst hit. We have launched a massive search operation in the region to apprehend the culprits. It is not clear if there were any casualties among the militants, and we cannot say who has carried out this attack at the moment,8221; the police official said.
