OCTOBER 1: A powerful earthquake struck central Mexico on Thursday killing at least 18 people, injuring more than 40 and badly damaging at least 300 buildings, official said.

Local news reports said the quake measured 7.4 on the Richter Scale and the epicentre was located 12 kilometres deep near the Pacific coast resort town of Puerto Escondido in the southern state of Oaxaca, about 500 kilometres south of Mexico City.

At least 15 people were reported killed in Oaxaca state, while two persons died of heart failure in Mexico city and another in the eastern state of Veracruz, officials said.

The quake damaged 431 buildings in Oaxaca, toppling facades of several churches, and wrecked all highways into Puerto Escondido.

Officials said the tremor struck at 11.31 am local time. Thousands of people fled their apartments and offices in Mexico city, according to television reports. City authorities advised calm, saying afterquakes would not be extreme.

By early Friday, three perceptible afterquakes hadstruck, none of them causing any worse damage.
