SAS NAGAR, Sept 29: The Sas Nagar Municipal Council met today and rejected the proposal to contract with private parties for collection of octroi in the township for one year. The proposal was mooted by Punjab Local Bodies Department. The meeting was hurriedly convened by MC president Harinder Pal Singh soon after receiving a letter from the Local Bodies director asking that privatisation of octroi collection be reconsidered.
Seventeen of the 25-member House were present at the meeting, including the council president, senior vice-president and vice-president.
The meeting had its share of commotion: seven members objected to agenda items involving expenditure of Rs 35 lakh which was allegedly passed without proper discussion in the last meeting. They explained that they were not against the items but quot;protest the manner in which they were passed and we will not confirm themquot;.
Later, when the two-point agenda was put before the House, the counsellors passed the item regarding increasing the posts ofchowkidars from one to three, but rejected the item on privatisation of octroi on a voice vote and demanded that the council send a strong letter to the Local Bodies director in this regard.
When contacted, the MC president said: quot;I am empowered to table items; these were discussed and passed in the last meeting.quot;
