CHANDIGARH, Sept 11: The Finance and Contracts Committee today accorded its nod to privatisation of sanitation in Sector 17 and picking up of carcasses from all over the City.
In its meeting held here today under the chairmanship of the mayor, the Committee decided to hand over the contract of maintaining sanitation in Sector 17 to Lions Club Chandigarh Midtown and Lions Club, Manimajra.
The two had earlier put in their offers to take care of the sanitation of half of Sector 17 each. While the Lions Club Chandigarh Midtown had proposed to take up the sanitation without cleaning of urinals of half of Sector 17 at a monthly rate of Rs 38,750, the Lions Club, Mani Majra, had also proposed to take up sanitation of another half of Sector 17 at a rate of 43,900 per month. The Lions Club Midtown had also proposed to take the manpower from Vishwa Kalyan Sabha, another NGO.
The MC Finance and Contracts Committee also decided to award contracts for picking up of carcasses from Chandigarh and Manimajra to private parties who had earlier put in their proposals. The MC had earlier delayed the award of contracts since the response to tenders was not lucrative enough and rates quoted were below the MC8217;s expectations.
The proposals passed in today8217;s Finance and Contracts Committee meet would now be put before the 29-member House of the Municipal Corporation, before the decisions are finally implemented. The MC was, at present, spending a total of about Rs 3.63 lakh per month on the salary of atleast 75 safai karamcharis and four supervisors employed for cleanliness of Sector 17, which excludes the expenses on the material used for cleanliness.
The Committee, meanwhile, also approved a proposal to provide a wrist watch to each of the sanitary employees of the Corporation, which would lead to an expense of about Rs 10 lakh.
