The work in Amritsar Municipal Corporation remained suspended today and the sanitation work came to a halt as the employees continued to hold protest against the solid waste management project.

Heaps of garbage could be seen in every nook and corner of the city. Various associations in the MC have charged Mayor Shawet Malik with privatising the work of picking up the debris and appointing a private company for it. The protesters feared they would lose their jobs if the project was implemented.

Addressing mediapersons today, BJP Lok Sabha MP Navjot Singh Sidhu clarified that no MC employee would be displaced after the implementation of the project.

8220;I give my word for it. If anything of this sort happens, we will all resign,8221; he said.

He said efforts would be made to convince the protesters. He claimed other municipal corporations of Punjab have shown interest in the project seeing its viability.

Newly-appointed chairman of Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board Baldev Raj Chawla said only 59 per cent of urban population of Punjab has the sewerage system and 86 per cent has facility of water supply.

He said efforts would be made to provide 100 per cent water supply and sewerage disposal systems to the public. He added Rs 1,000 crore have already been sanctioned for these projects.
