
CHANDIGARH, May 13: The new deputy mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh will be elected on May 26. The councillors would be given three days8217; notice for filing nominations for the post.
According to Mayor Gian Chand Gupta, the 29-member House is being convened for the election after seeking legal opinion from the UT Legal Rememberancer. The Corporation had earlier written to the Deputy Commissioner for convening the House, who had sought legal opinion.
The LR said the DC was authorised to convene the first meeting of the House, while later meetings could be convened by the Mayor himself.
Sources say the post of deputy mayor would be taken up by the Shiromani Akali Dal, the alliance partner of the ruling BJP in the Corporation.
The post had fallen vacant after former deputy mayor Mohinder Singh of the SAD had withdrawn. The Akalis were earlier demanding the post of mayor or senior deputy mayor and Akali councillor Harjinder Kaur had also contested the post of mayor, which she lost to BJP8217;s Gian Chand Gupta.
