CHANDIGARH, Dec 2: The infighting in the Bharatiya Janata Party, which caused it embarrassment in yesterday’s election of the MC Finance and Contracts Committee, has evoked demands of the Mayor’s resignation as well as the dissolution of the MC.

While the BJP councillors, who were suspended from the party yesterday for voting against the party’s official candidate in the Finance and Contracts Committee election, had already sought the sack of the Mayor, other political parties have joined in seeking not only the Mayor’s resignation, but also dissolution of the Corporation.

Chandigarh Territorial Congress has reiterated its demand of dissolving the Municipal Corporation, which it said, had become a battlefield for the BJP.

CTCC spokesman Sunil Parti, Congress councillor Raj Kumar Goyal, CTCC joint secretaries Sandeep Singh, Kamaljit Singh Panchhi and District Congress (Urban) president O.P. Verma, have separately demanded from the UT Administrator the dissolution of the MC. They added that since the BJP no longer had a majority in the MC, they did not have any right to rule.

Various other political parties jointly, including the Samajwadi Janata Party, Samajwadi Party, Janata Party and Communist Party of India, have also appealed to the UT Administrator for dissolving the MC since the BJP infighting was harming the Corporation.

SJP president Devinder Singh Babla, Samajwadi Party president Shivi Jaiswal, Janata Party president Ajay Jagga and CPI Secretary Sohan Lal Bansal, have stated that the current factionalism in the BJP and infighting was affecting the functioning of the Municipal Corporation, even as they have lost their majority due to the break in the party. The Rashtriya Janata Dal president V.S.T. Malik has also sought the dissolution of MC.
