
VADODARA, Nov 22: Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies, M S University Mayank Dholakia on Sunday stressed the need for imparting education in management techniques to doctors so that they could set up their business in the health sector successfully after completing their studies. He was speaking at the two-day Management Orientation Programme for Doctors and Health Sector Professionals organised by the Health Care Management Committee of the Baroda Management Association.
Stating that management studies were very relevant for health professionals as it was in case of engineers and other professionals, he observed that doctors spend a lot of time in acquiring professional knowledge and competence, but had to face a lot of difficulty while setting up a clinic or a nursing home.
8220;Doctors must utilise their resources effectively and fix long term and short term goals and prepare their strategies accordingly. Though basic values of a medical practitioner ought to be strictly followed so as to help the patients, they must shape their programmes in such a way that their objectives are also achieved,8221; Dholakia underlined.
He suggested that the medical community must change itself on the lines of other industries and make the best use of marketing techniques. Citing an example, he said that every good saloon kept the latest entertainment magazines to keep customers busy till their turn, but journals in doctors8217; waiting rooms were so old that no patient was interested in looking at them.
The two-week programme, which began on Sunday, will cover various management topics, including general principles of management in health sector and its application, organisation of work process in health units, staffing and communication, time managementand materials management, record keeping.
